Summer Series on the Saints

St. Gregory PalamasWednesday nights for the next four weeks of the summer will feature “Prayer, Asceticism, and the Spiritual Life: The Teachings of the Church Fathers” a lecture series examining the encounter between Biblical thought and ancient philosophy. The series will be conducted by Dr. David Bradshaw, who is a professor of Philosophy at the University of Kentucky. The classes will discuss monastic tradition and the role of Plato, Philo, Plotinus, Origen, Athanasius, Gregory of Nyssa, Dionysius the Areopagite, and Gregory Palamas in Christian mystical tradition.

The main texts used in the course will be The Origins of the Christian Mystical Tradition by Andrew Louth, and The Triads by St. Gregory Palamas.

When: Wednesday July 16, 23, 30 & August 6, 2008 from 7:30pm* – 9:00pm
Where: St. Athanasius Orthodox Church

Free and open to the public.
* Each class will be preceded by vespers at 6:30pm.
